Designing With Type began as a textbook devoted to the art and appreciation of typography. Through a wide variety of media channels, it has grown into a unique typographic resource for students, educators, and professionals, showcasing talent from around the world.

Designing with Type was first published forty-five years ago and is now in its fifth edition. This classic textbook has sold well over a quarter million copies and has been translated into multiple languages: Korean, Russian, and Spanish. DWT Workshop

Conducted internationally by James Craig, the workshop offers both a creative challenge for the students and a rare opportunity to compare their work with major schools from around the world. It  is built around three projects designed to explore different aspects of typography and graphic design. The projects are directed primarily towards students who are just beginning to appreciate the richness and potential of typography and are eager to learn more about its creative possibilities.

The DWT Team

James Craig

A well-known graphic designer, educator, and author of books on graphic design, James Craig was born in Montreal, Canada. He studied fine arts in Montreal and Paris before immigrating to the United States. He received his BFA from The Cooper Union and his MFA from Yale University. Mr Craig was the Design Director for Watson-Guptill Publications and is a member of the New York Art Directors Club, Type Directors Club (TDC), and Typophiles. Mr. Craig has written a number of successful books on graphic design and typography, among the more popular are: Designing with Type, Production for the Graphic Designer, Graphic Design Career Guide, and Thirty Centuries of Graphic Design. For thirty years Mr. Craig taught typography and design at The Cooper Union, now semi-retired he lectures widely, conducting workshops around the world.

Irene Korol Scala

Author, educator, and typophile, Irene Scala is a proud graduate of The Cooper Union where she earned a B.F.A. After postgraduate study at The Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, she returned to NYC to hone her craft. Having worked at Jakdesign, a multidisciplinary design studio, a couple of publishing companies, and a wide array of independent clients, Irene currently assumes the post of Creative Director of Spark451, a rapidly growing marketing firm focused on higher education. Irene Scala had teamed up with James Craig in teaching Typography at The Cooper Union. Together, she and Craig coauthored and redesigned the Fifth Edition of his classic textbook Designing with Type: The Essential Guide to Typography, which began their partnership in developing the entire DWT enterprise.
